Tonight I was so lucky to have attended a lecture from Pro.Jiang Xingfa, introducing Chinese opera.
The most inspiring part for me from Mr.Jiang, was when performing in Chinese opera, you don't need a wine glass to present drinking wine, you don't need a boat to present standing on a boat.
"The only thing you need is that your audiences are with you, their imaginations fill out the story. "
That's actually the same theory in traditional Chinese painting: ink washing painting. The art of using white space! Artists use white space to present water/river/ocean, it is all about imagination!
I found a good example of how modern Graphic Design is inspired by "white space theory". It is written in Chinese though, I will translate it a bit.
1. four keywords for this theory: charm, expense, focus, breathe.
2. "white space theory" does not mean to keep the space white, but decrease the distractions.
It could not solve every design problem.
3. examples.
4. it is about concept, style, attitude.
5. pratical tipps.
